Curly Shirley's Diary
We rescued Shirley from the 'dog man' who rang and said "I don't really want to put her down because she is so sweet and deserves a second chance."
On our way to have a look we decided that if there was anything wrong with her other than her feet, we should leave her there. Well, so much for that theory, she had all sorts of problems. She was only able to stand for a few minutes at a time and had to lay down to eat. She also had ECD (Equine Cushings Disease), which is an abnormal function of the pituitary gland. This gives her the shaggy appearance, hence the name Curly Shirley.
On seeing Shirley, Jeremy said to the 'dog man', "You sure know how to play on a man's heart strings dont you," and somehow she ended up at home.

Shirly when she arrived
July 7, 2006
Shirley's hooves measured 180mm. She was actually walking on her bulbs. She was trimmed and padded all four hooves. It took a while for Shirley to realize that she could now stand on her hooves. She was walking and even had a bit of a trot within minutes. We put her in a paddock on her own.

Shirley was doing well so we put two young horses in with her to encourage movement which worked well.
